Steve Morse on - The attitude necessary to build great technique
You hear someone really good play something amazing. Did they just wake up and do that? No, they practised. And the ones that got really good, were the ones who: tried it, fell down, and said: "oh wait a minute, what did I do wrong?'' and tried it again, and just kept analysing, trying, experimenting and having this drive to do it. If you're having a problem playing a passage, look for the weak point in it, and just practice that, you might make an interesting exersizes out of it. You've got to take the time to care about each little step. When they make these tall sky scrapers...I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect that they do it one piece at a time (laughs), its just like paying the guitar. How can you have a career playing the guitar? When you look at somebody and you really like their playing, they're just like a tall skyscraper. You hear them and ask them; "how did they do that?" They'd say: "We'll...I started with that piece and instead of balsa wood, I used a piece of strong material that was something I could build on". That piece of strong material that your going to build on, is your attitude which is: "I'm just going to get it right, and I'm not going to be happy unless I do, I'm not going to be satisfied with doing a half way effort". That's the foundation you build your career on. Your successful career. Steve Morse |
